It is running in the background every time you check your bank balance, send a text message, or log into your email. Most people never see it working, which is exactly the point. But when encryption is missing, weak, or implemented poorly, the consequences are anything but invisible. They show up as stolen identities, exposed medical records, and multimillion dollar breach costs that get passed down to customers in the end.

What Encryption Actually Does

At its core, encryption takes readable information and scrambles it into a format that looks like meaningless noise to anyone without the correct key to unlock it. Send a message, store a file, or submit a payment, and encryption converts that information into ciphertext before it travels anywhere. Only someone holding the matching decryption key can turn it back into something readable. Everyone else, including hackers who manage to intercept the data mid-transit or steal it from a server, sees nothing usable.

This matters because data, by its nature, moves constantly. It travels from your device to a company’s servers, between internal systems, across cloud providers, and sometimes to entirely different organizations. Every one of those transit points and storage locations is a potential point of interception. Encryption is what makes intercepted data worthless to whoever intercepts it.

The Three Places Encryption Has to Work

Encryption in Transit

This protects data while it moves between two points, such as from your browser to a website’s server. It is the reason a padlock icon appears next to a web address and the reason public Wi-Fi, while still risky for other reasons, does not automatically expose everything you type to anyone sitting nearby.

Encryption at Rest

This protects data while it sits in storage, whether on a company’s server, a laptop hard drive, or a cloud database. Encryption at rest is what determines whether a stolen laptop or a compromised server hands an attacker readable files or an unreadable scramble of characters.

End-to-End Encryption

This is the strongest and most meaningful form for personal privacy. With end-to-end encryption, only the sender and the intended recipient can read the content, not even the company operating the service in between. A provider offering true end-to-end encryption cannot hand over readable message content even if legally compelled to, because it never held the key to unlock it in the first place.

Why Encryption Is Not Optional, It Is Foundational

The financial case for encryption has become impossible to ignore. IBM’s 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report found that the global average cost of a breach reached a record 4.99 million dollars, a 12 percent jump from the prior year, with U.S. organizations averaging more than double that figure. Buried inside that same report is a far more damning statistic: 53 percent of breached organizations had not encrypted sensitive data at rest and in transit at the time of the incident, and another 10 percent were not even sure whether their own data was encrypted.

That gap comes at a direct, measurable cost. Extensive use of encryption is consistently associated with meaningfully lower breach expenses, alongside faster containment and reduced downtime. In other words, the organizations getting hit hardest are disproportionately the ones that treated encryption as optional. It is not.

What Happens When Encryption Is Missing

Without encryption, any data an organization stores or transmits is essentially readable to anyone who manages to access it, whether through a hack, a misconfigured server, an unsecured backup, or physical device theft. This is precisely why the largest breaches tend to expose plain, usable information: names, passwords, health records, financial details, private messages. When that same data is properly encrypted, a breach can still be a serious operational headache, but it does not automatically become an identity theft or extortion crisis for every affected person, because the stolen data itself is unusable without the key.

The Quantum Computing Threat, and Why It Matters Right Now

One of the more unsettling developments in encryption is a strategy known as “harvest now, decrypt later.” Sophisticated attackers, including nation-state groups, are already intercepting and storing encrypted data today, even though they cannot read it yet. Their bet is straightforward: once quantum computers become powerful enough to break today’s most common encryption methods, all of that previously unreadable, stored data becomes readable retroactively.

This is not a distant, theoretical concern. Security agencies including the NSA and CISA have confirmed the strategy is already active. Estimates for when quantum computers will be capable of breaking current encryption standards, an event often referred to as Q-Day, generally cluster around the late 2020s to early 2030s. In response, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized its first post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024, and major technology companies including Google and Microsoft have published timelines to migrate their own systems to quantum-resistant encryption by 2029. For any information that needs to stay confidential for years, financial records, health data, private communications, the migration to quantum-resistant encryption is not a future project. It is a present one.

Common Misconceptions About Encryption

“My data is encrypted, so I’m fully protected.” Encryption protects data confidentiality, but only if it is implemented correctly across every stage, in transit, at rest, and ideally end-to-end. Partial encryption still leaves meaningful gaps.

“Encryption is only necessary for sensitive industries like banking and healthcare.” Every email address, password, and private conversation has value to someone. Attackers do not discriminate by industry when the payoff, in the form of resalable personal data, is similar across the board.

“If a company says my data is encrypted, that’s the same as end-to-end encryption.” Not necessarily. Many services encrypt data at rest and in transit but still hold the decryption keys themselves, meaning the company, and anyone who compels the company, can still read the content.

Why This Matters for Something as Simple as Email

Email is one of the oldest and most widely used communication technologies in existence, and for much of its history, it was never designed with strong encryption as a default. Messages have traditionally been vulnerable both in transit and at rest, and even today, a large share of email providers hold the keys to your messages themselves rather than encrypting them end-to-end. Given how much sensitive information flows through email, from financial statements to medical results to legal documents, this is one of the clearest examples of why the encryption standard behind a service matters as much as the service itself.

This is exactly why encryption sits at the foundation of what we are building at Chrysaor. To see how we are approaching secure, privacy-first email, visit the Chrysaor home page and follow along as we roll out the details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between encryption at rest and encryption in transit?

Encryption in transit protects data while it moves between two points, such as from a browser to a server. Encryption at rest protects data while it is stored, such as on a server, database, or hard drive. Strong security typically requires both.

What is end-to-end encryption, and how is it different from regular encryption?

End-to-end encryption means only the sender and recipient can read a message, not the company operating the service in between. Regular encryption may protect data from outside attackers while still allowing the service provider itself to access the readable content.

Does encryption actually reduce the cost of a data breach?

Yes. Industry research consistently associates extensive encryption with lower breach costs and faster containment. IBM’s 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report found that more than half of breached organizations had not encrypted sensitive data at the time of the incident.

What is “harvest now, decrypt later”?

Harvest now, decrypt later describes attackers collecting and storing encrypted data today with the intention of decrypting it once quantum computers become powerful enough to break current encryption standards. Security agencies have confirmed this strategy is already in active use.

Email is one of the oldest and most widely used communication technologies in existence, and for much of its history, it was never designed with strong encryption as a default.
